Social Policies of Stalin : Education and Religion

Education: After the revolution, education began to shift its focus from competitiveness and lack of strictness, towards discipline and national focused.
- "'It is the duty of each school child to acquire knowledge persistently so as to become an educated and cultured citizen and to be of the greatest possible service to his country."
- This means that students were beginning to be taught to live for and improve their country.
-By improving strictness and discipline, some areas of education began to increase dramatically.
- illiteracy decreased substantially. approximately down to 4%
- Also use of propaganda was implemented more and more as education began to improve and become more popular. Students and younger children were encouraged to join parties, in order to build up the communist party.

Religion: the actions taken towards religion by Stalin, remained similar to those actions taken towards religion by Lenin.
- The majority of Bolsheviks felt that religion was the "opium of the people"
 - meaning religion was created as a means of distraction  for the poor and oppressed community to shift their focus  from the life that they are living towards the ultimate  happiness of "life after death."
-Worship of Stalin was urged among the population rather then worshipping a certain religion.

 - Thousands of religious worshiping centers were  destroyed and turned into other forms of buildings, i.e. Schools, cinemas, warehouses etc..

-Furthermore, the Communist party set up a "league of Militant Atheists," who's job was to try and turn people away from religion. numbers of followers began to increases dramatically within a 10 year span.
